Jason Momoa in Talks to Star In Upcoming Minecraft Movie


Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in Warner Bros. live-action Minecraft film The studio confirmed the news on Tuesday.



The film, which is inspired by the popular 2011 video game directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre). Momoa also starred as Aquaman in Warner Bros.' Dune. The Minecraft news was previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter.



A Minecraft movie was first revealed to be in the works at Warner Bros. more than eight years ago. In the year 2020, a release date of March 4, 2022, was delayed indefinitely due to the severity of the pandemic. The movie is yet to be updated.



Minecraft, one of the top-selling games ever, lets players explore 3D worlds that allow them to extract materials, craft items and build structures. The live-action film will be part of several video game-based movies, including Uncharted, Sonic the Hedgehog (and its sequel) and 2021's Mortal Kombat.



The film's producers include Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Minecraft developer Mojang Studios.  Minecraft Server Lists Mary Parent and Roy Lee are also producing. Jill Messick, who worked on the film prior to her death in 2018, will receive a posthumous producing credit. Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts are the film's executive producers. Jon Berg is also a producer.
